A traumatic brain injury can occur in numerous different ways.  A blow to the head is not the only way a traumatic brain injury can occur.  Any kind of unusual force, such as a violent movement of the head, can cause a traumatic brain injury.  For example, in a collision, a person’s head may be thrown forward and back.  This is commonly called a whiplash effect.  However, when the head is violently thrown forward or backward there is a momentum applied to the brain and then when the head suddenly goes the other direction, forces are applied on the brain which can cause a traumatic brain injury.  This is known by the term coup/contra coup brain injury.  A result in a sudden change in momentum of the brain can lead to a brain shear injury.  Thus, a person does not need to hit their head on something to suffer a brain injury.
